I work for G.M. , the blame for there problems is shared by the UAW and Management almost equally. You have some radical Local union Chairmen that are a problem. The UAW gave a number of consessions during the last contract 2007, $14 per hour wage, G.M now has NO responsibilty for retirement or medical coverage other than small lump sum payments yearly. The average wage was $19 an hour for manufacturing labor in 2007 . Nobody wants to talk about the physical problems that are inherent working the assembly line, 60% of the people I work with have had physical problems needing surgery. The union also gave up "Sub pay and Jobs bank", there is not much left in that dead horse.
But when G.M. hires shop floor Advisers [Management] that are not trained or qualified to do there jobs this becomes a problem with the basic build of the product. These people are paid $70,000 to $80,000 to take attendance. These people are under educated, inexperinced and usually family or friends of upper management, this hiring process must stop. They are a negative asset when it comes to the basic build of the product. This is 40 to 50% of lower management. I know that the idea of replacing top management is 1000% correct, but take a closer look on down the hill. As a taxpayer, inside GM looking out i know bailout is a waste of money , unless changes are made in management. I have worked in 3 different assembly plants over the years and only the name on the front of the building was different.
