Great list. I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards and all these bankruptcies has really affected our business. I've been following some of the BKs, on savvywallet.com. As Rafael said, the end cost is ultimately on the consumer. For example: Most recently The Sharper Image bankruptcy has left thousands of people holding Sharper Image gift cards and credit stranded and empty handed. Many of these consumers have emailed me to see what we can do to help. Honestly? There isn't much out there. One crazy store was this lady who made a bonus, and her company offered her gift cards, she selected $1200 for The Sharper Image about 6 months ago, she paid $400 in taxes, and now she's left empty handed and then some.

The number of bankruptcies makes no sense unless you include the amount lost per institution so to give the reader more indepth appreciation (sticker shock) of the actual cost to the economy and ulitmately us, the consumer.
